Unboxing

First Impression

Coming in its classic box, the AVI-8 Atlas Hawker Hunter GMT has a striking and rugged aesthetic. The deep green dial gives it a military-inspired feel. The design, with its bold markers and clean lines, works for both its functionality and style. The Amazon green colour is definitely a great choice as it makes the watch stands out and works in tandem with the rest of the colour accents. Definitely impressed so far!

Dial

Starting with the outer index, there are minute track around the edge is finely printed, adding to the precision of the time reading and suits that the watch was built for. Coming inside, large batons, which have a luminous coating are bold and large to help with the hour reading. To finish off, small numerals have been used on the inner index to help with the time keeping.

One interesting feature is the changing of colour with the outer index. The upper half is in a black colour but slowly shifts to the Amazon Green towards the second half. The thin stripes used to create this is very subtly and it is an interesting feature. Overall the Amazon Green hue on the dial evokes a sense of the outdoors and military style, making it a standout piece in any collection. The color is not only bold but also versatile, offering a subtle elegance. The combination of colour chosen for the dial, Green, Black and Copper and ‘Gold’ work very well together to bring the dial to life.

AVI-8 Atlas Hawker Hunter GMT

One important addition is the GMT function, which is shown by a second, ‘thinner’ hand, with a red tip, that indicates a different time zone. In addition to being a useful addition for pilots and for international travelers, this piece is tastefully integrated into the entire design, appearing subtly on the dial without overpowering it.

The date window at 6 o’clock is a nice touch, providing convenience without disrupting the dial’s symmetry. It has to be said that window date is large enough and does stand out very well. We have seen with many watches in the past where the date window was more or less a last minute thought from the designer.

The hand design chosen, skeleton arrows, are well though of. By using the skeleton design, this allows the Green colour theme to flow and also prevent the watch from having a colour dump on the dial.

Case

The AVI-8 Atlas Hawker Hunter GMT is definitely on the larger side. It is 44m by 14mm and it will take a lot of space on the wrist. It is also not your usual round or oval shape but has an extended body with cuts. Made from 316lL stainless steel, the case is robust and feels solid on the wrist, providing both durability and a sense of premium quality.

The bezel is made from aluminium and we have to say that it is sturdy. When using any bezel, you want to feel and hear the click and we can guarantee you that this is the case for this watch. The bezel is solid and the rotates well. It feel the part and also looks the part with the changing colour from black to green. The numerals on the bezel are printed on and you can feel them when touched.

The minerals lens is a good choice, we would rather go for sapphire for this durability and scratch proof properties, but the minerals lens does the job. Glares is low but can be visible subject to where the light is coming from. Do have a look at the unboxing video to have a look.

The back casing is open, and given the name of the watch is ‘Atlas’, there is a line design which helps to show the world map in a way. The custom rotor in the orange colour is a fantastic touch.

The lugs are curved to inwards and this helps to push the watch on the wrist, which is needed given the size of the casing.

Movement

Powering the AVI-8 Atlas Hawker Hunter GMT is a Seiko NH34A. This movement is known for being a reliable and a precise automatic caliber, ideal for watches with GMT functionality. It features a 21,600 vibrations per hour (vph) frequency and offers a 41-hour power reserve, ensuring consistent timekeeping. Time accuracy is expected between +45 to -35 seconds per day. It is a large swing but this is standard. You can reduce the gap by wearing and rotating the movement more.

Strap

Made from genuine leather, the strap is comfortable and wraps around the wrist well. No need to be broken into and the will fit a small wrist, no smaller than 17cm in circumference. The buckle as with all AVI-8 watches has been signed wit the logo. Also note there are no quick release pins.

Buy, Shortlist or Avoid?

As always, let us discuss the price. This watch retails for £427 and we have to say this is on the upper end for this type of watch. Yes, the colour goes really well and the features on the watch speaks for themselves. However, we cannot justify paying £427 for this watch. Therefore we will shortlist this watch and shop around to see what else is available in the market.
