First Impression

The packaging was similar to the Spence 300. That being said, that’s where all the similarities end. The Spinnaker Hass Automatic is larger and also thicker. The choice of colour for the dial and the stainless steel bracelet do go well together and one particular feature which we like the most is the flat lens. It is a bold watch with a bit of flair added to it.

Spinnaker Hass

Dial

There are three layers to the Hass, with a convex design. The first index has small white batons to mark both the minute and seconds. Despite being small in size, the batons go well against the white background and they are legible. The next index are bold batons with Swiss Super-LumiNova applied. The batons stand out from the rest of the dial and do take a lot of the space. The Swiss Super-LumiNova work well and legibility in low light is not an issue. The final piece of the dial is the center. The center index plateaus and numerals from 13-23 surrounds the index. The numbers are quite small to see but they are more for aesthetic purpose.

The date window is interesting on the Spinnaker Hass Automatic. It has a custom roulette style date wheel with the weekdays. The window is pretty large and legible. The only issue is that the orange colour chosen to represent the date, is not very legible. It gets lost in the black background. A more lighter and brighter orange colour would have made a big difference.

Spinnaker Diver watch

Plongeur hand design has been used for the hour and minute hand while a syringe design for the second hand. The hands have different and distinctive colour. While the hour hand is large and yellow, the minute hand has an orange perimeter, same for the second hand. All the hands have applied LumiNova.

In terms of the colour choice, the black background goes well against the yellow and white batons. The stainless steel casing and bracelet also complement the colour.

Casing

The Spinnaker Hass Automatic has 43mm diameter with a 16mm width. It is definitely a large watch and takes up as much space on the wrist. In a way, you would want such a large dial because of the boldness of the watch. Comfort wise, the casing sits well on the wrist and does not get in the way. The curved lugs also helps to press the watch on the wrist and wraps around the wrist well.

The bezel used is also quite large in width. The 120 clicks is smooth and crisp. The measurement is precise also. The numerals on the bezel have also been given Swiss Super-LumiNova, which is an added benefit and also adds to the aesthetics of the watch.

Teeth-cut design has been given to the crown and it is very simple to use. The screw down system is manageable and changing the time and the date is very easy.

We touched on this before, the Sapphire Lens with Anti-Reflective Coating is flat. This is beneficial to the watch given its already large size and this helps to reduce the glare on the dial.

Another Spinnaker watch and another closed back casing. While it has been embossed at the back, an open casing would have been a nice touch, to see the heartbeat and rotor.

Movement

We have a Japan TMI NH16 powering the Spinnaker Hass Automatic. We have not come across this movement before. The closest we got was the NH15. But we have been impressed by this workhorse movement. It handles the time keeping well along with the day and date movement. The time accuracy is around 10 ~ +30 seconds per day, with 21,600 vibrations per hour. It is a solid movement for the watch.

Strap

A stainless steel buckle has been used for the watch and it the perfect match. The H design of the links helps to differentiate the stainless steel strap and also makes it look good. The clasp buckle is secure with two security feature. Would a leather strap suit the watch? We do not think so. Using a leather strap or even a rubber strap would not match the size of the watch and also ruin the look.
