It was a new direction for Spinnaker to introduce the chronograph and they have now extended this to the Fluess series. First Impression
The first feature which will stand out straight away is the dial. It is something you do not expect with a Spinnaker watch and it is very alluring. The different colour combination, the red and black accent, go well together and makes the watch very much striking. Overall, our first impression is really good and we cannot wait to delve deeper in reviewing the Fluess Chrono.
Casing
It is a huge watch for sure. The casing is 43mm in diameter by 13mm. The Fluess Chrono will take much a lot of space on the wrist but with such a stunning dial, you would not mind at all. The curved lugs helps to push the casing on the wrist and the 13mm height does not seem much.
We have come across the bezel before on the SP-5055-44. It is the same bezel, with 120 clicks. The movement of the bezel is smooth and the teeth cut design around the edge helps to get a strong grips when turning. The bezel have numbers on each quarter and bars to fill in the rest of the numerals. The numbers are legible and they have been given a Swiss Super- LumiNova for great eligibility at night. A hardened glass has been placed over the bezel to give it an enhance look and also to protect it.
There are three crowns as you would expect on a chrono watch. The main crown to control the hands and date is a push and pull. The rest of the crown is to control the sub dials. Overall, the crowns are a good size and can be easily used.
The lens is made from Sapphire and given a scratch resistant coating. There are glares depending on the angle of the watch but otherwise visibility and legibility is perfect.
Dial
The feature which will attract you to the watch is the combination of colours. You have the black background contrasting against the dark yellow index and hands, and the subtle red colour accent. The combination of colours is perfect. It give the watch a fast pace feeling and look to it and goes well as it is a chrono watch.
Let’s talk about the index of the Fluess Chrono. There are 4 numerals (2,4,8 &10). The numerals are in a dark yellow colour and are huge. The rest of the index are filled with a mixture of yellow batons with minutes intervals and white batons. The visibility of the numerals is good. The numerals have also been given Swiss Super- LumiNova and legibility at night is great.
The sub dials are of course the main attraction of the watch. One the right hand side you have the hour counter, at the 6 o’clock position you have the minute counter and on the left hand side is the second counter. The background of each of the sub dial is different to the main granite like matte finish dial. All of the sub dials are large enough to read and their hands are also large enough. However the second sub dial has to be most interesting sub dial. It has a red colour accent at three 10 second interval. It again adds the fast pace feeling to the watch. In terms of functionality, they work perfectly without any lags. The sub dial react well when the crown is pressed. All the sub dial hands have also been given a Swiss Super- LumiNova finish.
The date window is located at the 12 o’clock position. Its style is similar to the one used on the Spinnaker Hull. The date window on the Fluess Chrono is large enough but does not take too much space on the dial. The white background helps to make reading the date easy.
The hands design is similar to a plongeur style and the second hand has a breguet type design. The hands are large with Swiss Super LumiNova applied. The second hand is in red to emphasize the colour accent throughout the watch.
To finish off, the Spinnaker name is written below the date window, with the ATM. It is a simple and nice touch.
Strap
The strap on the Fluess Chrono is perfect. The strap is made from a silicone and leather hybrid. It fits well around the wrist and wraps around well and tight. The strap does not need much breaking into due to the silicone and it is very comfortable around the wrist. There are enough holes to fit smaller wrists.
The colour scheme on the fits the ‘fast pace’ look to the watch. The side and back of the strap is red and matches the colour accent on the dial.
The strap are also interchangeable. Si if you fancy the bracelet, it can be easily changed.
Overall, the feel and aesthetic of the watch is great!
Movement
The movement inside is a Meca Quartz Japanese Chronograph with Seiko VK73. This movement has been around for a while and is perfect for the watch. The time accuracy on watch has a crisp feel and the movement and functionality of chronograph feature is also perfectly well balanced with the Seiko VK73.
Given normal usage of the Fluess Chrono, we can expect a life expectancy of 3 years from the battery.
Buy, Shortlist or Avoid?
As always, let’s discuss the price of the watch. The Fluess Chrono retails for $260/ £209/ €240. At the moment you can sign up your interest for the watch. There is also a stainless steel bracelet model of the watch, at a higher retail price.
We think you should buy this watch. The price is great for the watch and it has a lot of great features. The look of the watch is alluring and the chronograph feature is flawless.
