You know how much we love exploring new brands and labels from around the world and the last post was closer to home with AVI-8 Lafayette Flyboy watch. But this time we are going to Pakistan and you are going to love this! Who else is having problem pronouncing Çaplait Shoes? Just pronounce the Ç as S.
The last time we did a post on shoes was Patara Shoes and that went like a storm on Kickstarter and now they are taking orders on their site. This time around, we also think that Çaplait Shoes will also be a high flier.
So who is Çaplait Shoes?
First of all, the Çaplait Shoes are known as Peshawari Chappal. They are very famous and mostly worn in Pakistan. However with a growing love of the Peshawari Chappal from around the globe, they are becoming a fashion trend and fashion lovers around the world are falling for them, and so are we!
In 2014, however was a turning point for the Peshawari Chappal. The famous Sir Paul Smith took the idea of the Peshawari Chappal and created a similar shoes but retailed it around £300! Why Sir Paul Smith, Why? Why exploit a traditional design and claim it to be your own?
But that was not the final story! There was a huge revolt on social media with thousands of people complaining about originality of the shoes and with strongly supported petition to led to Sir Paul Smith to add ‘inspired by Peshawari Chappal’ in the description.
Still, £300 for a pair of Peshawari Chappal made by Sir Paul Smith, also known as ‘saplay’ by the local people of Pakistan, is very expensive! With fond memories of wearing saplay all of his life especially during Eid and family wedding, Usman decided to create his own.
To keep the Pakistani heritage and culture, Usman kept the local name, saplay, but added their own modern and fashionable twist with a French translation. So Çaplait is Saplay!
Handcrafted and Ethical Made
All Çaplait shoes are designed in the UK but are hancrafted in Pakistan. With the help of world renowned shoe designer Jessica Beecham, all of Çaplait shoes designs are inspired by a traditional embroidery called Phulkari. This is a type of embroidery is practiced quite a lot in Pakistan and usually feature geometric patterns from everyday life and motifs like barley heads and wheat.
The designs are then passed on to artisan in Pakistan to produce the Çaplait shoes by hands. With many products being produced in factories in order to reduce cost, handcraft is a dying form of production and this can have severe economic impact on local people. However, with Çaplait, all of their shoes are handcrafted and this financially support artisans in Pakistan while also allowing them to keep the art of handcraft going.
The Collection
There are currently only three designs for women: the Jisti, the Swati, and the Hara. All of the sandals are made out of the highest quality, genuine leather and suede, as well as being embroidered with cotton.
I know you are absolutely loving these Çaplait shoes . Personally, we would go for the Justi Gold. It is the dark navy blue with the little gold barley heads. Usam, if you are reading this, we would love to have one!
The price. You would be very surprise about the price. For a handcrafted product you are expected to pay at least £100 or more but for one pair Çaplait shoes of your choice it only cost £59 which is very much affordable!
Do show your support of Çaplait shoes on Kickstarter where they are also giving a bonus gift to certain supporters which is not available anywhere else.
