Yes it is another watch review and I know you love them! This time we have an AVI-8 Watch!

I love my minimalistic watches. The last post I did was on Cate & Nelson watch which is a very simple and clean-looking watch. I absolutely love that watch. Thinking of minimalistic watches, all my watches are minimalistic and simple except for the GENT Porthos.

Sometime you are wearing an outfit, the minimalistic style watch does not really go well and you want something with more oomph! A watch that’s going to make people say “I see you!” and I pretty sure the AVI-8 Flyboy Lafayette is that watch!

So a little about AVI-8 and about Flyboy Lafayette

They are a UK-based company and produce watch which are inspired by military aviations. All of their watch collection are named after military aircraft for example the Hawker Hurricane and Lancaster Bomber.

The name Lafayette originates from the Lafayette Escadrille who are also known as the ‘founding fathers of American combat aviation’. They were 38 volunteer pilots who flew to France in 1916 before the US entered WW1 and were integral to the formation of the U.S. Army Air Service.

To pay homage to the ‘founding fathers of the American combat aviation’, AVI-8 created the Flyboy Lafayette, where their youth, recklessness and bravery is represented in the design of all of the Flyboy Lafayette collection.

So it is worth the hype?

There has been a lot of hype around the AV 4054 collection and the watch above is the AV 4054-03. I have read a couple of other reviews before receiving the watch and people were really pleased and excited about the watch with some great reviews. But is it worth the hype?

First the packaging of the watch is impeccable. I’m not just saying this, the box it came in is just gorgeous. The green colour with the brown AVI-8 logo stitching at the top with a light yellow stitch going around the corner of the box is quite something. I have done an unboxing of the AV 4054-03 on YouTube and I definitely encourage you to watch the video.

Inside the box

You do get a lot of things inside the box and one thing that really surprised me was the cleaning cloth. I have unboxed many watches but never have I ever found a cloth cleaner. It was really helpful when doing the photo shoots though!

My first impression when I unboxed the watch was very good. I was definitely attracted to its sense of calmness and also the watch was not overly distracting with too much going on in the background. With its only its minute, hour and date dials in the background it was not too complicated.

So I wore the watch for a week and it was very comfortable around the wrist. The strap is made of genuine leather and fitted on my wrist quite well. The strap is around 22mm long, so even if you have a large wrist, this should fit you without any trouble.

The weight of the watch is perfect for me. The whole watch weighs around 80g and for me that is the perfect weight. I do love watches which are quite heavy but not too heavy that it weighs down your hand.

The watch face is the right size for me personally. It is 42mm and the thickness is around 12mm. The watch face is covered in harden facet cut mineral crystal lens with sapphire coating and it is very clear when reading the hands. The numbers of on the dial are readable and date surrounded by a silver ring and white background is very noticeable.

The movement of the hands were flawless with its Japan Quartz Chronograph 1/5 second. It also has a Tachymeter reading with the red numbers on the outer dial. For those reading and do not know what the Tachymeter is for, it is to measure the travel time or measure the speed given the distance. The hands along with the numbers are luminous so you do not need to take your phone out to check the time.

The back casing of the watch is well done with the Flyboy Lafayette logo engraved on the its stainless steel case.

One feature with all the Flyboy Lafayette watches is that the three colours of red, white and blue. This is French Tricolore. The hand stitched French Tricolore is to represent the legendary Lafayette pilots.

So to answer my question, is it worth the hype? In a way yes! The AV 4054-03  is definitely a magnificent watch and will suit any gentleman with a clear and distinct sense of style. Along with its high quality craftsmanship, this is truly an amazing piece. However I have to be honest and say that it does not scream out to you. It is a subtle watch and this is what I think AVI-8 were going for and if that is true, then they have definitely done it.

Another thing I would love to see on the watch is removable straps. I have grown accustomed to having removeable straps as it is easy to clean the watch case and you can go for different look. A black strap on this watch will definitely match!
